Urban sustainability has become a critical global priority in response to rapid urbanization, increasing environmental degradation, and widening socio-economic inequalities. As cities continue to expand, they face complex challenges related to resource management, infrastructure development, climate change, and social inclusion. This review synthesizes multidisciplinary literature on sustainable urban development and community wellbeing, emphasizing the need for integrated approaches that bridge environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability.
The paper critically examines key theoretical frameworks, including sustainability science, resilience theory, and participatory governance, to understand their application in urban contexts. It further explores governance mechanisms and policy interventions that promote inclusive decision-making and community engagement. Particular attention is given to environmental strategies such as green infrastructure, renewable energy adoption, and climate adaptation measures, as well as social inclusion approaches that address equity, accessibility, and community empowerment.
