Abstract

Sustainable urban development has increasingly shifted from traditional, top-down planning models toward more inclusive and participatory approaches that prioritize community engagement, empowerment, and local decision-making. This evolution reflects growing recognition that sustainable cities require not only efficient infrastructure and economic growth but also social equity, environmental stewardship, and citizen involvement. This review synthesizes multidisciplinary literature on sustainable urban development, highlighting the transition from conventional planning paradigms to community-centered approaches that integrate theoretical, empirical, and practical insights.
The study examines key theoretical foundations of urban sustainability, including systems thinking, resilience, and the “triple bottom line” framework, and explores governance mechanisms that promote transparency, accountability, and participatory planning. It further evaluates participatory models that engage local communities in decision-making processes, thereby enhancing social inclusion, equity, and wellbeing. Emerging trends such as smart cities, digital technologies, and climate-resilient urban design are also analyzed for their potential to improve efficiency, resource management, and adaptive capacity, while addressing challenges related to data equity, social inclusion, and environmental justice.
By emphasizing the integration of local knowledge, social equity, and environmental sustainability, this review underscores the necessity of multidisciplinary collaboration across urban planning, public health, environmental science, and social governance. The review concludes with actionable recommendations for policymakers, urban planners, and other stakeholders, advocating for inclusive, adaptive, and evidence-based approaches that foster resilient, equitable, and sustainable urban systems capable of responding to the complex challenges of 21st-century urbanization.
