Abstract

Cruise tourism has emerged as a dynamic and rapidly expanding segment of the global tourism industry, offering significant economic opportunities while simultaneously posing complex environmental and operational challenges. This study examines the development and functioning of cruise tourism in Kerala, India, through the framework of cooperative tourism, which emphasises community participation, decentralised governance, and stakeholder integration. Kerala’s unique model of cooperative tourism is analysed as a mechanism for enhancing inclusivity, local economic benefits, and adaptive capacity in the face of evolving industry demands.
The research further explores the role of advanced technological systems, particularly semantic grid technologies, in improving the efficiency, coordination, and resilience of cruise tourism operations. In parallel, the study critically assesses the environmental vulnerabilities of Kerala’s tourism sector, with a focus on the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events and flooding and their implications for infrastructure, safety, and sustainability. Additionally, the paper investigates the potential influence of solar activity on precipitation variability, contributing to a broader understanding of climatic risk factors affecting the region.
