Abstract

Tourism is a significant global industry with profound effects on local economies and livelihoods. This review explores both the positive and negative impacts of tourism on economic growth, employment, infrastructure development, and cultural preservation. Positive outcomes include job creation, revenue generation, and the enhancement of local infrastructure, which collectively support economic development. However, tourism also brings challenges such as economic overdependence, inflation, environmental degradation, and cultural erosion. Case studies from Bali, the Mediterranean, and Costa Rica illustrate the complex dynamics of tourism's impact on local communities. To optimize the benefits of tourism while minimizing its negative consequences, sustainable practices and strategic management are essential. This review emphasizes the need for responsible tourism policies to balance economic gains with social and environmental well-being.
