Abstract

The Muziris region in central Kerala represents a historically significant maritime hub and a unique cultural landscape shaped by centuries of global trade and intercultural exchange. The Muziris Heritage Project (MHP) reflects a strategic initiative to revive and conserve this legacy through the integration of archaeological preservation and community-based tourism. This study critically examines the potential for developing Muziris tourism within the framework of Kerala’s cooperative tourism model, emphasising inclusive growth, local empowerment, and sustainable heritage management.
The research situates cooperative tourism as a participatory and resilient approach capable of addressing the socio-economic and environmental complexities of the region. Particular attention is given to the challenges posed by Kerala’s monsoon-driven climate, including extreme rainfall events and flooding, which have significant implications for tourism infrastructure, safety, and long-term sustainability. Additionally, the study engages with emerging scientific perspectives on the relationship between solar activity, atmospheric dynamics, and precipitation variability, highlighting the need for climate-informed tourism planning.
Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, the paper integrates historical analysis, cooperative governance theory, and environmental research to propose a comprehensive model for Muziris tourism development. The findings underscore the importance of aligning heritage conservation with community participation and climate adaptation strategies. Ultimately, the study contributes to ongoing policy and academic discussions by presenting cooperative tourism as a viable pathway for fostering resilient, inclusive, and sustainable tourism development in the Muziris region.
