Abstract

Nonprofit organisations (NPOs) play a vital role in addressing social, cultural, environmental,
and economic challenges globally. However, their effectiveness and legitimacy increasingly
depend on robust governance structures, sound leadership practices, and reliable social impact
measurement. This review synthesises the literature on nonprofit governance models, board
dynamics, stakeholder engagement, social impact assessment methodologies, organisational
effectiveness, and ethical/legal considerations. It discusses the advantages and limitations of
various governance frameworks, examines measurement and evaluation tools used to assess
social outcomes, highlights challenges in stakeholder collaboration, and identifies best practices
and research gaps. The review provides a conceptual framework for integrating governance and
impact measurement to strengthen accountability, performance, and longterm sustainability of
nonprofits.
