From Page to Screen: Issues and Challenges in Reading Habits in the age of Information Overload

The dynamic and disruptive nature of digital technology has changed how readers attempt to acquire information. This paper highlights issues of moving back to traditional print reading instead of digital reading in the information overload area with the focus on altering reading habits, attention span, and comprehension among the students. The effect of technology on reading preferences, frequency and engagements was investigated in a mixed-method approach. Research was done using a sample of 88 respondents from HNIMR Institute, Pune. According to the findings, although digital media are convenient and easily available, they have led to short attention spans and narrow reading. The respondents did not share the same opinion on the effectiveness of digital reading. Majority found it convenient, however, many feared that it might become distracting and difficult to concentrate. The paper finds that the introduction of technology in reading should be done in a prudent manner to achieve a balance between the benefits of digital reading and the traditional reading experience.
